MIAA: 300 flights affected by typhoon
MANILA, Philippines — Around 300 flights were affected by the onslaught of Typhoon Nina (international name Nock-Ten) in the country as of Monday morning, the air authority said.
"As of 6 'o clock this morning, we were able to account 300 flights that either delayed, rescheduled or canceled," Manila International Airport Authority General Manager general manager Ed Monreal said at a televised press conference.
He noted that the number of affected flights may yet climb as more are being considered for rescheduling.
Monreal said the MIAA will be lifting the runway closure in the evening once the situation is more stable.
"We will be open until the next day to accommodate all recovering flights," Monreal said.
Typhoon Nina traversed southern Luzon on Monday after lashing Bicol region on Christmas Day the day before. It is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Wednesday morning.
The Philippine Coast Guard, meanwhile, said more than 10,000 passengers were stranded at various ports nationwide.
In its advisory, the PCG said travel was suspended for 1,047 roll-on roll off vessels, 37 sea vessels, six motor bancas since Sunday.
