MANILA, Philippines - The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has surpassed its P4.84 billion collection target for 2016.

In a statement, the NTC said total collections  amounted to P4.87 billion to date, higher than the P4.84 billion target for the year.

NTC said the latest performance was due to efforts to strictly enforce stakeholders’ compliance in remitting administrative, spectrum and penalty fees.

Among those regulated by the NTC are cable and commercial television operators, broadcast radio stations, telecommunications companies and two-way radio operators.

Given the remaining weeks for the year, NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba said “the NTC management is rallying its entire workforce to try to reach the P5 billion mark before the year ends.”

“This last ditch effort is NTC’s humble way of contributing to various national government public service programs pushed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte - priorities of which are on infrastructure, agriculture and rural development, as well as peace and order,” Cordoba said.

The NTC is an agency attached to the newly created Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

Cordoba said earlier, the NTC and DICT are working together to come up with the terms of reference for the auction of frequencies to be offered to parties interested to become a third telco player in the country.

Frequencies to be offered for bidding include the 3G license of Connectivity Unlimited Resources Enterprise, the 700 Megahertz band, as well as other frequencies returned by telcos to the NTC.

Cordoba said the bidding process for the frequencies could start by the middle of next year.
