Napocor studies potential sources of energy

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The country has over 200 river basins with potential for hydropower development for energy security, according to an ongoing study of National Power Corp. (Napocor).

This was the initial result of the study being undertaked by the Engineering and Development Corp. of the Philippines (EDCOP), Napocor president and CEO Ma. Gladys Sta. Rita said in a text message to The STAR.

EDCOP won the bid to do the feasibility study on the Napocor project called “Hydropower Development Study in Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG)/ Missionary Areas.”

The firm specializes in engineering and design service for power, water resources, transportation systems, geotechnical and environmental systems, integrated area development and commercial and industrial establishments.

However, the number of river basins that may be developed may still be reduced depending on their potential, Sta. Rita said.

“The recent submission of interim culminates the inventory phase. The study will be carried out in three phases as inventory, pre-feasibility study and feasibility study,” she said.

“Under the next phase, the more attractive sites will be selected for further assessment (pre-feasibility study) to determine which sites are worthy to be brought forward to full blown feasibility study,” Sta. Rita said.
