Aboitiz coal plant in Davao under repair

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The newly-built coal-fired power plant of Aboitiz Power Corp. in Davao is being repaired due to boiler leak which caused tripping earlier this week.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, AboitizPower said Therma South Inc.’s 130-megawatt (MW) Unit 1 tripped at 2:40 p.m. last April 6.

“After an investigation conducted today, it was found out that the unit has a boiler tube leak,” it said.

The company said repairs on the affected unit are expected to last 14 days.

Meanwhile, AboitizPower said TSI’s Unit 2, which has a 130-MW net capacity, remains operational to provide supply to the Mindanao grid.

The P35-billion baseload coal-fired power plant in Davao City was inaugurated last January.

The first unit of the Davao plant started commercial operations in September 2015, originally scheduled in June.

The delay was caused by the series of rotational brownouts in the Mindanao grid following the outage of the 210-MW coal-fired power plant of Steag State Power Inc. and Mt. Apo geothermal plants.

Meanwhile, Unit 2 started delivering capacity just last January.
