AboitizPower unit starts full operations of Davao coal plant

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Therma South Inc. (TSI), a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corp., is now delivering the full capacity of its 300-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Davao City, providing the Mindanao grid its much-needed baseload capacity.

AboitizPower said the TSI plant will be inaugurated next week, Jan. 8.

TSI’s two 150-MW circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) coal-fired power plant is located at the boundary of Brgy. Binugao, Toril District, Davao City and Brgy. Inawayan, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

The first 150-MW unit of the Davao plant started commercial operations last September, originally scheduled in June. The delay was caused by the series of rotational brownouts in the Mindanao grid following the outage of the 210-MW coal-fired power plant of Steag State Power Inc. and Mt. Apo geothermal plants.

Currently, the Unit 2 of the Davao plant is in commissioning phase, AboitizPower president and COO Antonio Moraza said in a text message to The STAR.

“We are on commissioning now and already delivering near capacity of 270 MW net. We hope to declare commercial by third week of January,“ he said.
