CGBP offers seminar on education laws

MANILA, Philippines - To help school owners and administrators come updated on laws and regulations for educational institutions especially with the implementation of K-12 program, the Center for Global Best Practices will run a seminar titled “Solving Legal Issues in Education Law”, to be held on Thursday and Friday, April 23 and 24, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel in Mandaluyong City, Philippines.

This program is intended to address the problems, challenges, and most difficult issues faced by educators, school administrators and owners as well as align their school policies, student and HR manual with all the special laws applicable to primary, secondary and tertiary private educational institutions.

The lecture will include the New/Revised Manual of Regulations for Private Schools in Basic Education.

This two-day lecture is designed to help schools understand education law to protect themselves from torts and liabilities arising from lawsuits, address compliance issues, and at the same time align their administrative and operating policies to new and existing government regulations.

Participants will also learn about the relevant laws governing tuition fees, opening of branches and extension classes, students’ legal rights, admission and discipline, campus security and safety, parents-students-teachers issues, and special laws unique to educational institutions including issues on K-12 implementation.

This special program will feature the foremost authority in education law, lawyer Ulpiano “Ulan” Planes Sarmiento III, author of Education Law and the Private Schools: A Practical Guide for Educational Leaders and Policymakers; and Compendium of Education Legislation for Private Basic Education.

These are the most comprehensive books that compile all the different laws and cases related to education.  It serves as definitive references of all schools and educational institutions, including the Commission on Higher Education. 

Atty. Sarmiento is currently the dean of San Beda College of Law in Alabang. 

His involvement in issues affecting education was heightened during his stint as assistant secretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs to DECS Secretary Lourdes R. Quisimbing, his membership in the Panel of Consultant, Teachers’ Welfare and Benefits, Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM) of 1991, and later as Executive Director of the Congressional Oversight Committee on Education (COCED).

He also served as a lawmaker, representing the A TEACHER partylist. He also serves as legal counsel of many colleges and universities nationwide.
