DA turns over P30-M farm assistance to Ilocos Sur

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Agriculture (DA) recently turned over more than P30 million worth of farm assistance to Ilocos Sur to strengthen the crops and livestock subsectors in the province.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala turned over to the province the Balingaoan-Caterman Farm-to-Market Road (FMR) in Candon City.

The P3-million project was funded by the Department of Agriculture and implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 2nd District of Ilocos.

The 400-meter long, four-meter wide FMR facilitates the transportation of agri-products from farms to the market.

This reduces postharvest losses and damage to products of farmers who cultivate 287.5 hectares in both Brgys. Balingaoan and Caterma.

During a farmers’ forum held recently in Candon City, 23 units of four-wheel tractors worth around P20 million and hand tractors with accessories (10 units worth around P1 million) were awarded to various irrigators associations, livelihood associations, and farmers’ associations.

“The President instructed me to deliver to you assistance and interventions, discuss your problems, and make you feel that the government is with you in all your agricultural endeavors,” Alcala told farmers during the forum.

The 2nd District of Ilocos Sur is one of the rice and high-value crops-producing districts in Region I.

Aside from the infrastructure and equipment support, the DA also turned over the P10 million worth Candon City Slaughterhouse and Trading Center.

The local government of Candon provided as equity the one hectare area and P3.4-million fund for waste management, tools and pre-operating expenses.

The DA is also in talks with Ilocos Sur governor Ryan Luis Singson for the establishment of a multiplier farm for livestock to provide additional sources of livelihood for farmers and ensure food security in the province.
