Globe builds classrooms from old phones

Patricia Lourdes Viray - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom will build classrooms out of recycling old phones for students in Aklan.

The telecommunications company aims to build at least 40 schools in Aklan which were damaged by super typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.

Aside from building classrooms from recycling proceeds, Globe's Project 1 Phone will educate the public about the importance of proper disposal of electronic waste or e-waste.

“We can give our old phones one last wonderful by donating them to Project 1 Phone and be instrumental in providing our schoolchildren a decent place to study.  At the same time, we can help save the environment by freeing it of toxins which are emitted by the wrong use of e-waste disposal,” Yoly Crisanto, senior vice president of Globe Corporate Communications, said.

The first phase of the project include the construction of classrooms that will also serve as evacuation centers in the municipalities of Altavas, Balete, Banga, Batan, Libacao, Madalag and New Washington. A number of 30 regular "built back better" classrooms will be constructed in the second phase.

Obsolete and unwanted electronics and electrical devices are also identified as e-wastes as they have harmful chemicals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and beryllium that pollute the environment.

Donation bins for non-working phones and tablets, mobile phone batteries, and chargers are available at all participating Globe Stores in various parts of the country (for the complete list, please visit the Globe Telecom website www.globe.com.ph/project1phone ), Globe said.
