Sales of imported vehicles up 27%
MANILA, Philippines - Sales of imported vehicles in the first five months of the year rose 27 percent from the same period last year because of strong sales of passenger cars, the Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors (AVID) said yesterday.
In its sales report, AVID said aggregate sales of its member companies rose to 12,887 units from January to May, up from the 10,151 units sold in the same period last year.
Sales of passenger car (PC) models rose 77 percent to 8,004 units in the first five months of the year from the 4,528 units sold in the same period last year.
The top three contributors to the growth in sales volume are Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI), The Covenant Car Company, Inc. (TCCCI), and Motor Image Pilipinas, Inc.
For the month of May alone, total sales of AVID member firms rose 11 percent to 2, 255 units from the 2,032 units sold in the same month last year. This was likewise driven by strong sales of PC models that rose to in 1,476 units in May, up 47 percent in the same month last year.
May sales of HARI, distributor of Hyundai vehicles, rose to 1,737 units in May 2012 from 1,643 units in the same month last year. Sales of TCCI, distributor of Chevrolet vehicles, rose to 236 units in May from 181 units in the same period last year. Sales of Subaru importer Motor Image Pilipinas Inc. rose to 143 units in May from 80 last year.
May sales of MINI cars importer British United Automobiles. Inc. rose to 12 from nine last year; sales of CATS Motors Inc., importer of Mercedes-Benz, rose to 78 in May from 72 last year. Audi and Porsche importer PGA Cars, Inc. sold 31 units in May, up from 29 last year.
Volvo importer Scandinavian Motors registered a flat growth of 18 units in May 2012 from last year.
