I am away for my annual sabbatical leave. My commentaries on issues of the day will resume on the 23rd of April, 2012.
FilOil Flying V Pre-season tournament
Congratulations to FilOil Flying V and their affiliates as the Villavicencio group of companies continue their commitment to support collegiate basketball in the country. The 2012 version of the much awaited Filoil Flying V Pre-Season tournament is paving the way for another exciting collegiate basketball season.
With the conclusion of the US NCAA March Madness which was won rather handily by the heavily-favored Kentucky U Wildcats, attention of local basketball fans will shift to the anticipated start of our own collegiate basketball competitions with the opening of the UAAP, NCAA and CESAFI leagues.
Raffy Villavicencio, the sportsman son of Chito Villavicencio and prime mover of the Villavicencio group of companies, initiated the idea of a pre-season tournament involving the teams of the UAAP and NCAA leagues. The tournament is now considered as an essential part of the training and selection process as all these teams gear up for the start of the season.
The 2011 season is well remembered for several notable achievements. Ateneo Blue Eagles captured its fourth straight UAAP championship. San Beda Red Lions lorded again in the NCAA besting its arch-rival San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags. The Stags, however, recovered towards the end of the season by upsetting Ateneo Blue Eagles for the 2011 Champions League (PCCL) National Collegiate championship.
The FilOil Flying V Pre-season tournament should not only whet the appetite of basketball fans but will also give us a glimpse of the contenders for the UAAP and NCAA titles and the Champions League (PCCL) 2012 National Collegiate championship.
Again, congratulations to FilOil Flying V Sports for organizing and managing this exciting event.
