I am away for my annual sabbatical leave. My commentaries on issues of the day will resume on the 11th of June, 2010.
2010 Philippine Collegiate Championship Games
The first phase of the nationwide search for the best collegiate teams involves tournaments being conducted by the “mother leagues” in various provinces and cities. The performance and ranking of the teams in their respective “mother leagues” will be the basis for advancing to the next levels of competition – the regional championships, the qualifying zonal games and the “Sweet 16” Finals.
The “Sweet 16” Finals is the last phase of the competition where the best 16 collegiate teams compete in knock-out games (losers go home) to determine the national collegiate champion.
For the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Championship Games, the “Sweet 16” Finalists were: Ateneo Blue Eagles (2009 Champion), Far Eastern University Tamaraws (runner-up), San Beda College Red Lions (3rd place), SSC-Recoletos Golden Stags (4th place), University of the East Red Warriors, Mapua Cardinals, UST Growling Tigers, Letran Knights, De La Salle U Green Archers (2008 Champion), Unversity of Visayas Green Lancers, JRU Heavy Bombers, Arellano University Chiefs, SSC-R Cavite Baycats, University of Cebu Webmasters, University of San Carlos Warriors, and Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates.
Since the year 2003 Champions League competitions, 34 different teams have made it to the “Sweet 16” Finals. The five teams with the most number of appearances in the “Sweet 16” Finals are University of Visayas Green Lancers, FEU Tamaraws, UE Red Warriors, Ateneo Blue Eagles and the San Beda Red Lions.
