Why we do what we do
I met Dr. Ola Madsen many years ago when this huge and muscular motivational speaker came to the Philippines, and I was given the privilege to share the same speaker’s platform with him. This Swedish man is very committed to his faith. He sent me an email which I share with you now. Dr. Ola says: “Knowledge is no power. The implementation of knowledge is power.” What you do with what you know makes all the difference in the world. Repetition is the key to internalization.
Success is not complicated. But why don’t we have it? Let’s take a look.
Health. You have heard the statement “Life is short”. Many people make conscious choices everyday to shorten their lives. They smoke cigarettes, eat more than they should and remain sedentary. Over 300,000 adult deaths in the US each year are attributable to unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity behavior.
More than 60 percent of adults are not regularly active, and 25 percent are not active at all.
Less than 20 percent of high school students are active for no more than 20 minutes per day.
Americans spend $33 billion annually on weight loss products and services.
Wouldn’t it be a lot cheaper to just eat less and go for a walk?
Parenting. People say they want great kids. The reality is that, parents spend just an average of three minutes per week in meaningful conversation with their children. Twenty five percent of teenage girls have STD, while 30 percent of children six to 19 years of age are either overweight or at risk of being obese.
TV. Seen those commercials about how you can lose weight without changing your diet or doing any exercise?
People drink and drive, get into accidents, and then sue the bar for over-serving them. People say they want a great relationship with their spouse, but a study says 65 percent of married people spend more time with their computers than with their spouse. We have high school graduates who cannot even read their own diploma. People ask, even pay for advice, but won’t take the advice.
Human beings are the only species on earth who knowingly choose to be less than what they could potentially become. No other living thing in nature chooses to be less than it could be. Only people do that.
People choose to die earlier than they have to by living an unhealthy lifestyle.
People choose to learn less than they could.
People choose to be less.
You choose everyday to do less that what you could do, be less that what you could become, and have less than what you could have. Knowing this should make you committed to changing your life.
People say,
I want more money.
I want a better relationship with my spouse.
I want a promotion.
I want to be healthy.
I want to live a long time.
I want to be happy.
I want to be smarter.
I want, I want, I want...
People say such things, yet their words ring hollow.
The truth is, you want what you have that’s why you have it! If you wanted something different, you would have done something different. Or at least, you are taking action to get something different. You have been living a lie, and it’s time you take a good look at the truth.
“The truth is that your life is the way you want it to be.”
Success is simple once you’ve understood this basic concept.
Your life is the way it is because of the actions you have taken.
Your actions produce your results. Nothing else.
A person’s behavior indicates the kind of person they are.
The truth is that people really do want the success they talk about. They want more money, better health, better kids and all the things they say they want. However, their thinking has convinced them that simply verbalizing the desire will make it happen. Saying out loud what you want increases the desire, but it doesn’t turn it into reality.
Action turns your wants into reality.
Guess what the Bible has to say?
Faith without works is dead.
