MNTC installs 'crash cushions' at NLEX

-

The Manila North Tollways Corp. (MNTC) has installed six impact attenuators – three each at the Balintawak and Bocaue toll plazas – further beefing up the safety features of the 84-kilometer North Luzon Expressway.

The impact attenuators, also called crash cushions, are meant to mitigate damage to fixed structures, vehicles and people arising from vehicular collisions. These devices were designed to absorb an errant vehicle’s kinetic energy, as well as redirect it away from a hazard.

“This is a first of its kind in the Philippines. Only NLEX has installed impact attenuators in its toll plazas,” Jose “Ping” de Jesus, MNTC president and CEO, said.

Typically composed of sand or water filled barrels or modules, impact attenuators are placed in front of fix structures near freeways such as gore points, Jersey barrier introductions, or overpass supports. Temporary versions can also be used for road construction projects.

De Jesus said there are already existing protection mechanisms at the NLEX toll plazas which consisted of concrete chariots, flexbeam guardrails and Jersey barriers. “With the setting up of the impact attenuators, the safety system is further enhanced to protect motorists and toll tellers alike in case of vehicle collisions”, he said.
