Rice production target may be out of reach - Yap
The targeted rice production growth of 5.8 percent for 2008 may not be attained, Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap said yesterday.
In an interview at the opening yesterday of Agrilink, Yap said that based on preliminary third quarter figures reported by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS), the targeted growth of six percent is not likely to be attained.
“Di kaya, (It can’t be attained),” Yap said, adding that he would have to restudy the numbers.
Projected rice production for this year has been set at 17.3 million metric tons.
Meanwhile, Yap expressed optimism that Congress will approve the P39-billion budget the Department of Agriculture is requesting for 2009.
The P39 billion is for the DA alone. An additional P6 billion is being requested for DA-attached government-owned or controlled corporations (GOCCs).
For this year, the DA’s budget is P25 billion, plus an additional P2 billion for its GOCCs.
The DA-attached GOCCs include the National Food Authority, the National Irrigation Administration and several others.
