Meralco’s engineering unit offers to improve Clark electric system

Meralco Industrial Engineering Services Corp. (Miescor), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), will present a two-year power service work program to Clark Electric Corp. (CEC) for the improvement the electric system within the Clark area.

"We will present to them what we are planning to do within the next two years," Meralco president Jesus Francisco said.

Meralco, partly-owned by the Lopez family and the government, is the country’s largest power utility firm. CEC is the electric service provider of the Clark special economic zone (CSEZ) being run by the Clark Development Corp.(CDC).

Francisco said Miescor and CDC have been partners in providing electricity in Clark.

"We have to ensure that we will have continuous improvement in the area," Francisco said.

He said the program for CEC will make the special economic zone more attractive to the local and foreign investors particularly the locators.

"This will benefit both the old and new entrants in the economic zone," he said.

Miescor is engaged in power generation, transmission and distribution, petrochemical/chemical and industrial plants, water resources, transportation and telecommunication system and building services.

The Washington Group Inc. (formerly Morrison Knudsen) acquired 25 percent of the company in 1989 as part of its marketing strategy in the Far East and Asia Pacific regions.

Miescor has been supporting Washington Group’s manpower requirements for detailed engineering and construction management for their projects in Asia and US even after the Washington Group had transferred its entire share in Miescor to Meralco in March 2002.

At present, Meralco owns 97 percent of the company while Miescor Provident Fund holds the remaining three percent.

Miescor has four subsidiaries, namely: Miescor Builders Inc., Landbees Corp., Clark Electric Distribution Corp., and the San Jose, California based Miescor USA.

The Philippine Contractor Accreditation Board classifies Miescor under the highest "AAA" category as a general engineering, building and specialty electrical and mechanical contractor.
