UPS expands flight operations

-
International logistics and distribution firm, United Parcel Service (UPS) Philippines has increased its flight operations in the former US military base in Clark, Angeles, Pampanga. Clark Development Corp. (CDC) executive vice president Victor Luciano said the move refuted earlier reports that UPS is pulling out of Clark to transfer to Thailand.

From a frequency of only three flights a day, Luciano disclosed, UPS has increased its flights to nine in only one and a half years.

By February next year, Luciano further assured, UPS is further adding an additional three flights for a total of 12 flights a day.

UPS, Luciano said, currently uses one Boeing 747, two McDonell Douglas MD11s, two Boeing 767, and four Boeing 757.

For his part, Bases Conversion Development Corp. (BCDA) president and chief executive officer Rufo Colayco explained that with the current globalization, logistics and distribution firms no longer adhere to a single hub concept. Instead, most firms adopt a complementary, multiple hub system.

This appears to be the approach of another logistic firm, Fedex, which is currently operating out of Subic but is exploring further operations either in Clark or in China.

"Clark would thus have to compete to get such business in the future," Colayco said. – Marianne Go
