Tuna industry sees better prospects

-
GENERAL SANTOS CITY – Against the backdrop of stiff international competition and growing concerns over resource sustainability, the Philippine tuna industry remains upbeat over the sector’s vast potential for growth provided that private sector leadership is adequately supported by government policies and programs.

This was the consensus reached by some 400 delegates to the 5th National Tuna Congress, as they rallied behind calls to preserve the gains made by the local tuna industry and also proposed solutions to specific concerns affecting the industry’s development.

In concert with the theme "Sustaining the Philippine Tuna Industry," Congress participants submitted 11 resolutions to concerned national government agencies – all aimed at boosting the industry’s competitiveness and ensuring its continued expansion in the coming years.

Congress delegates also expressed their satisfaction with recent trade policies that are expected to open up more opportunities for Philippine tuna products in the global market.

Working sessions focused on how to take advantage of these positive trade developments which translate into higher exports earnings, generate more jobs within the industry, and further reinforce the country’s position as a global leader in tuna production.

Also taking center stage during the Congress was the local tuna canning sector that has exhibited remarkable growth over the past year, and the tuna processing sector which is gearing up to penetrate more lucrative foreign markets.

Speaking on behalf of President Arroyo, Agriculture Secretary Luis "Cito" Lorenzo underscored the need for long-term industry planning to help ensure the sustainable management of the country’s tuna resources.
