Manning takes over as CEO of HSBC in RP

Warner Manning arrived in Manila recently to take over from Paul Lawrence as chief executive officer of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corp. Ltd. and concurrently as chairman of HSBC Savings Bank (Philippines) Inc.

Paul Lawrence, who has been in the Philippines for six years, will take up the position of chief executive officer Singapore in December 2002.

Manning previously headed HSBC’s operations in Brunei and had been with the HSBC Group for 20 years, holding various positions in finance, IT, planning, corporate banking and personal financial services.

He started his career as an accountant after graduating with an honors degree in Business Management in 1976. A fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and an associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, he worked with KPMG management consultants in Hong Kong in 1980. Manning started his career in HongKongBank in 1982 as a finance director of the HSBC Group’s property company for three years.

His involvement in information technology progressed in 1986 when he held the position as manager, technical services in HongKongBank, Hong Kong. From 1987 to 1991 as manager, Group Information Strategy, he was in charge of strategic planning and the development of the HSBC Group’s product information technology strategy. This required him to work all around Asia and on special projects, including Microsoft in the United States.

From 1991 to 1993, he led the group’s product development team worldwide; and as senior manager banking services from 1993 to 1997 his responsibility expanded to marketing, and research for the Asia Pacific region.

Prior to his posting as CEO in Brunei, he worked as senior manager, planning in Asia, directing bank acquisition planning in Japan, Korea and Thailand.
