TOFIL winners bared

Five outstanding professionals have been chosen to receive this years The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Award.
The five awardees are: Corazon Santos-de la Paz for Public Accounting; Antolin M. Oreta, Sr. for Engineering; Lawrence C. Cua for Technopreneurship; Justice Flerida Ruth P. Romero for Justice and Law; and Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco for Business and Entrepreneurship.
The TOFIL Awards is a project of the Philippine Jaycee Senate in partnership with Insular Life. Now on its 13th year, it aims to give public recognition to Filipino men and women, 41-year-old and above, whose exemplary achievements have contributed to public welfare and national development.
This years awardees were chosen by a board of judges composed of Chief Justice Hilario G. Davide, Jr. as chairman, with members Dr. Estefania Aldaba-Lim, Bishop Federico Escaler, Insular Life trustee Alfredo B. Parungao and TOFIL 99 chairman JCI Sen. Sergio O. Valencia.
De la Paz is the chairman and senior partner of Joaquin, Cunanan & Co., a member firm of PricewaterHouseCoopers, the largest professional services firm in Asia and the world. Under her leadership, the firm experienced remarkable growth and prestige, such that it is now considered a pillar of ethical practice in the country. Her personal management and integrity enabled her to be given presidential appointments by Presidents Aquino, Ramos, and Estrada, as well as recognition from different institutions in the country.
Oreta is the chairman of A.M. Oreta & Co., a construction firm that became the vehicle for his outstanding contributions to the progress and development of the country. He has built structures for public and private works, commerce and industry, education, health and recreation, most of which have become landmarks and symbols of the countrys progress and growth, epitomizing the talent of the Filipino.
Qua is the chairman, president and CEO of the Ionics Group of Companies. He was one of the pioneers in the semiconductor business in 1974, and the only one to have succeeded. He has established 10 electronics manufacturing facilities in the country, and one in the Silicon Valley, the Ionics Circuits, USA, providing jobs to 9,000 workers, uplifting the capabilities of the Filipinos, and enhancing the countrys electronics competitiveness globally.
Romero is a retired justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. She popularized the law, bringing it closer to the understanding of the ordinary citizen through print and electronic media, lecturing and writing on global concerns such as peace and human rights, and actively involving herself in projects for law and judicial reforms. She is presently judge of the administrative tribunal of the International Labor Organization, and the first Filipino to occupy such position.
Yuchengco is more popularly known for being the chairman of the Yuchengco Group of Companies, one of the largest and most diversified conglomerates in the country composed of the Malayan Insurance Group, Great Pacific Life Assurance Corporation, House of Investments, and Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. He was also once the countrys envoy to China and Japan, causing significant growth in Japanese trade, investment and development assistance in the Philippines. Even as an accomplished businessman, Yuchengco develops and promotes the concept of social return on investment through the AY Foundation, which focuses on private investment for the public good.
The awarding ceremonies will be held on Dec. 13, 2000 at the Insular Life auditorium in Makati City.
