Webtechnologies Asia readies RP to join wireless world

-

The Philippines is definitely joining the worldwide race to capitalize on wireless technology, if the recent spate of advertisement for WAP (Wireless Applications Protocol) 'phones' is an indicator. Webtechnologies Asia Inc., a local wireless applications developer, said WAP technology allows wireless devices and phones to access the Internet.

Ian Ong, WAP Systems head at Webtechnologies Asia Inc. said, "Mobile Media, our wireless applications and content group, has developed WAP-portfolioTM, the Philippines' first interactive applications range. The product is a WAP portal offering tightly integrated, quality local content services specifically addressing market demand for wireless users. PC users can also access and enjoy the web sites."

Smart and Globe, whose major press campaigns both boast a range of services specifically suited for WAP enabled phones, are currently promoting WAP in the hope that the local market will embrace the new technology -- as much as it did with text messaging. Webtechnologies Asia Inc. is currently developing m-commerce (mobile commerce) applications, allowing Filipino businesses to conduct on-line transactions with their customers.

Webmasters Asia Inc. is a leading developer of wireless applications, leveraging its expertise in 3G (Third Generation) technologies. The company, a subsidiary of Hong Kong based Webtechnologies Corp. Ltd., has been developing its wireless delivery technology since the advent of the WAP standard in 1999. It will soon offer several value added service products to telecom operators and Internet service providers (ISPs), allowing them to generate significant revenues in this fast changing market.

Mario Santiago, the company's media chief, stated "The market for mobile communications services is predicted to be immensely productive with the Philippines already holding the distinction of being the world's text messaging capital. However, only quality of content and the usefulness of applications will fuel the increase in wireless users. As long as content quality is paramount, I can see WAP quickly finding its mark here," said Santiago.
