Cargill Phils says it was wrongly accused by anti-Bt corn groups

-

Cargill Philippines, Inc. said in a statement that it was wrongly accused of conducting field tests of Bt corn, a genetically enhanced corn variety, in General Santos City, the Philippines. It was also wrongly named in a lawsuit filed by interest groups on Monday against several government agencies and companies in connection with the same.

Cargill said it sold its international seed business, including what is now Agroseed Corporation in the Philippines, to The Monsanto Company in 1998. Cargill Philippines has no involvement in the seed business or in the field testing in General Santos City.

Under terms of the sale, Agroseed was allowed to keep Cargill's name on signs at its facilities for a period of time, but has now removed Cargill's name from its signs. Cargill is taking legal steps to be removed from the lawsuit.
