Steelcorp obtains ISO certification

The Steel Corp. of the Philippines (Steelcorp) a 100-percent Filipino-owned flagship company operating under the umbrella of Philsteel Holdings Corp. has been conferred an ISO 9002 (Quality System Standard for Manufacture) certification for high quality production of cold rolled steel, galvanized iron and Galvalume 55 steel sheets and coils.

The ISO 9002 accreditation was granted by the Certification International Philippines Inc. following final audit and assessment of Steelcorp's production facility and operating processes in Balayan, Batangas last November.

In an official letter to Steelcorp chairman Abeto Uy, managing director Renato Navarette of Certification International Philippine said "after your successful completion of the requirements for certification, the governing board of Certification International Philippines hereby awards Steel Corp. of the Philippines a Certificate of ISO 9002:1994."

"We congratulate your plant management and staff on their fine accomplishment in establishing and implementing a quality management system that will support your company's effort to continually improve the quality of its products and services and consistently satisfy its customers. Top management support has been instrumental to the attainment of ISO 9002 certification," Navarette added.

Navarette, past director of the Bureau of Product Standards (BPS), viewed Steelcorp's ISO 9002 certification as an incontestable proof that the company has been aggressively pursuing its commitment for excellence that sits well in the government's efforts to prepare the country for globalization.

He recalled that during his watch at the BPS, the government suffered difficulties in monitoring and curbing substandard products, particularly in the steel industry sector.

For his part, incumbent BPS director Jesus Motoomull conceded that government regulatory bodies such as the BPS should be armed with more power to enable it to vigorously enforce set standards for product quality for the protection of the local consumer.
