Gionee smartphones bridge the tech gap

Jennylei D. Caberte - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Smartphones have been around for at least a decade but not everyone who owns them knows how to use one.

People with limited means or who are not as "techie" often go for basic and “user-friendly models” that make them miss out on the capabilities of smartphones. This tendency is now considered a disadvantage, given the plethora of mobile offerings available in the market.

This disadvantage is what Gionee Communication Equipment Co. Ltd. of China aims to address by making smartphones accessible and unique enough to cater to the needs of more Pinoys.

As the newest mobile phone player in the Philippines, Gionee Mobile head Katrin Salanga-Gregorio understands there are some hesitations in trying out a new brand.

Gregorio admitted she experienced the same hesitation when she first heard about Gionee.  Her concerns were laid to rest, however, especially after experiencing the unique features of a Gionee smartphone.

"At first, of course, I was cynical but when I saw and personally experienced a Gionee mobile phone, I was humbled," Gregorio emphasized in her speech at the recent Gionee media launch.

"A simple thought came to mind – experience is the mother of trust.  You won't trust a product without testing it," she explained.

The China-based firm is a leading mobile phone manufacturer that prides itself in producing "golden quality" mobile technology.  It has a wide array of affordable but user-friendly smartphone units that can keep Pinoys connected to friends and family.

Gionee’s newest handset launched recently in Manila was the Elife E6 which has a 5-inch display, 12-megapixel camera with panoramic capability, a 32GB memory, and motion sensing technology, among its features.  The phone is the most high-end Gionee phone but is more affordable compared to most popular brands.

Aside from the Elife E6, Gionee has also introduced other high quality mobile phones in the Philippine market. These include the entry-level P2 and the GN708 which is increasingly becoming popular due to its features and free accessories such as extra batteries and portable charger.

"In Gionee, trust me when I say that quality is experienced in every handset.  It offers features that are products of its own well-funded research and development that continues to update, upgrade, and innovate.  The strict manufacturing process of every mobile phone will definitely bust the myth of the 'Made in China' bias" Gregorio stressed.

Gionee was founded on September 2002 by Liu Li Rong.  It is a high tech enterprise that focuses on the R&D, production and sales of cellular mobile devices.  The company's R&D centers are located in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hangzhou and other places.  In 2006, the first phase of the project had a total investment of more than one billion renminbi and covers an area of 500 acres of the Gionee Industrial Park.

Since the start of the industrial park, Gionee's production capacity has now peaked to 40 million units per year.  Once the industrial park gets completed, its production capacity will hit 80 million units per year and make the facility as China's largest mobile phone production site.

"Gionee believes that products should be as unique as the people who use them.  We define ourselves as a global provider of mobile and nternet technology that is user friendly, stylish, and wallet friendly. In short, a brand that makes people’s life better," Gionee stated.

Since 2011, Gionee moved rapidly to expand its presence into India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand, Myanmar, Russia, Africa, Malaysia, the Middle East and now, the Philippines. The expansion thrust goes on with exports reaching one million phone units per month for overseas markets.
