Phivolcs kumambyo: Metro Manila apektado ng 'sulfur' mula Bulkang Taal
MANILA, Philippines — Binawi ng Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) ang nauna nitong pahayag, habang kinukumpirmang apektado na ng Bulkang Taal ang kaledad ng hangin sa Kamaynilaan.
Martes nang sabihin ng state volcanologists na "smog dulot ng polusyon ng tao" ang sanhi ng malabong kapaligiran sa Metro Manila. Kaso, nagbago ang ihip ng hangin ngayong araw.
"In view of the scientific data from the abose satellite platforms, the DOST-PHIVOLCS stands to acknowledge evidence of the wider extents that volcanic SO2 have actually spread over the [National Capital Region] and adjoining provinces and gives credence to the many observations that the public have communicated," sabi ng ahensya, Miyerkules.
"As a scientific institution, we have been reminded again of the value of uncertainty and the limitation of our data, the value of citizen observation and the need to constantly challenge our own perceptions, interpretations and ideas."

Una nang iniulat ng Phivolcs na umabot sa 14,326 tonnes/day ang pinakamataas na SO2 flux sa Taal Region.
Wala pa namang inuulat na paglikas ang NDRRMC sa ngayon sa mga kalapit na lugar ng Bulkang Taal, ngunit "maaaring may maganap o manalasa sa paligid ng Taal Volcano Island na phreatic eruption, volcanic earthquake, bahagyang abo at mapanganib na pagbuga ng volcanic gas."
"The plumes extend from the planetary boundary layer or PBL, representaing representing near-ground surface level, to the upper tropospher at almost 20 kilometers above sea level and mostly spread over the Batangas, laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan and Zambales Provinces and the National Capital Region," dagdag pa ng Phivolcs.
Lumalabas din sa kanilang June 29 satellite detection ang mas malaking coverage ng isla ng Luzon. Itinuturing ang Taal bilang isa sa mga pinakaaktibong bulkan sa Pilipinas. Nasa Alert Level 2 ang volcano sa ngayon.
Matatandaang Enero 2020 lang nang umabot sa Metro Manila ang peligrosong ashfall mula sa nasabing bulkan dahil sa Alert Level 4 activity nito.
Kaledad ng hangin sa Kamaynilaan
"PM2.5 concentration in Manila air is currently 3 times above [World Health Organization] exposure recommendation," ayon sa real-time reporting ng Switzerland-based IQAir ngayong araw.
Bagamat inilalagay ngayon ng IQAir sa "moderate" (99) ang air quality index ng Maynila, ipinapayo nila ngayon ang pagsasara ng bintana upang maiwasan ang maduming hangin.
Pinapayuhan din ngayon ang mga sensitive groups na bawasan muna ang outdoor exercise sa ngayon.
Volcanic sulfur dioxide? Ano 'yon?
Ayon sa American Lung Association, tumutukoy ang sulfur dioxide (SO2) sa isang gaseous air pollutant na binubuo ng sulfur at oxygen. Nabubuo ito tuwing nasusunod ang mga sulfur containing fuel gaya ng coal, langis o disel.
Nagco-convert din ng sulfur dioxide sa atmostphere bilang sulfates, bagay na bumubuo sa mayorya ng fine particle pollution sa eastern USA. Ang SO2 ay sinasabing toxic at may masamang amoy. — James Relativo
