Air pollution 'silent killer'

MANILA, Philippines - Pinag-iingat ng Philippine Medical Association (PMA) ang publiko laban sa air pollution na itinuturing nilang ‘silent killer’ at banta sa buhay ng mamamayan kasabay nang pagsasagawa ng multi-sectoral roadside anti-smoke belching apprehension drive sa C-5 road sa Pasig City, kahapon ng umaga.

Ang naturang roadside campaign ay resulta ng katatapos na Clean Air Summit for Metro Manila no­ong nakaraang linggo na inorganisa ng iba’t ibang grupo sa pangunguna ng Department of Health (DOH), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), PMA at iba pa.

Paliwanag ni Dr. Mardave Martinez, vice president ng PMA, ang air pollution ay maaaring mauwi sa iba’t ibang respiratory diseases tulad ng lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases gaya ng heart attack at stroke, neurologic problems kabilang na ang impaired Intelligence Quotient (IQ) at maging sudden death o big­laang pagkamatay.

Lumitaw din na may 1.3 milyon tao sa buong mundo ang namatay dahil sa outdoor air pollution at 2 milyon pa ang naitalang human deaths dahil naman sa indoor pollution taun-taon.

Babala pa ni Martinez, ang mga bata ang pinakamadaling mabiktima ng air pollution, batay pa rin sa istatistika ng DOH.
