Mababakanteng puwesto sa SC, 16 ang aplikante

Umabot sa 16 ang aplikante para sa iiwang puwesto ni Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruben Reyes, na magreretiro sa Enero ng susunod na taon.

Sa listahan ng Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), kabilang sa mga interesado bilang ma­ ging Supreme Court (SC) Justice ay ang walong Justices ng Court of Appeals, ang Presiding Justice ng Sandiganbayan, tatlo mula sa private sector, Court of Tax Appeals Presiding Justice at Solicitor General.

Ito’y kinabibilangan nina Court of Appeals Justices Portia Horma­chuelos, Martin Villa­rama Jr, Andres Reyes, Remedios Salazar-Fer­nando, Josefina Sa­longa, Juan Enriquez Jr, Mariano del Castillo, Jose Reyes Jr., Court of Appeals presiding Justice Conrado Vas­quez Jr, at Justice Jose Sabio.

Sa Sandiganbayan naman sina Presiding Justice Diosdado Pe­ralta, Associate Justices Francisco Villaruz at Edilberto Sandoval, dating Internal Revenue Commissioner Jose Bunag, dean ng Ateneo University law school Cesar Villanue­va, Atty. Rodolfo Robles at Solicitor General Agnes Devanadera.

Ang pangalan ng limang mapipili mula sa 16 nominees ay isusu­mite ng JBC ang kani­lang rekomendasyon kay Pangulong Arroyo.

Si Justice Reyes ay nakatakdang magretiro sa January 2, 2009, ka­sunod ng kanyang retirement age na 70 years old, pero mas pi­naaga ang retirement ceremony at isasa­gawa sa December 18, bago ang Christmas break ng Korte Su­pre­ma. (Gemma Amargo-Garcia)
