Power firms mananagot ‘pag ipinasa sa taumbayan ang VAT

Mananagot sa taumbayan ang mga power firms sakaling ipasa nila sa mga consumers ang inaprubahang Expanded Value Added Tax (EVAT) partikular matapos ang exemptions ng mga ito sa pagbabayad ng naturang buwis.

Ayon kay Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr., hindi dapat magtaas ng singil sa kuryente dahil malinaw sa bersiyon ng Senado at Kamara na pinagtibay nila ang "no pass-on provision of the proposed law".

Nakasaad sa Senate version na ang VAT ay babayaran ng generation, transmission at distribution companies at hindi nila pwedeng ipasa ito sa mga consumers, residential man o commercial.

"Contrary to the criticism that the consumers will ultimately shoulder the cost of the VAT, it is the power producers and distributors that should directly pay the additional cost because of the strict no pass-on provision of the proposed law," paliwanag ni Pimentel.

Wika pa ni Pimentel, walang saysay ang pahayag ng Association of Electric Cooperatives na ang 6.6 milyong residential customers nila at ang 4.5 milyong customers ng Manila Electric Company (Meralco) ang magbabayad ng 10% ng power bills sakaling tanggalin ang exemption ng power sector. (Rudy Andal)
