Challenges of ageing in the Philippines

SENIOR CITIZEN - Antolin dela Serna - Banat

Una sa tanan, kining pangutana, gikan sa internet, kon unsa kuno ang mga issue giatubang karon sa mga senior citizens sa Pilipinas. Tubag sa Google: “The challenges faced by the elderly in the Philippines include the need for improved social services and support, unmet financial security needs, inadequate access to healthcare services, the lack of an age-friendly environment, and the need for family support.”

Imo ba kining na-felt karon, ang kakulang hapit tanang butang nga makatubag unta sa mga concerns sa senior citizens?

Pananglitan, sa RA 9994, giingon nga ang retirement benefits sa mga seniors, ‘shall be regularly reviewed to ensure their continuing responsiveness and sustainability.’ Kon pila man nga pension ang atong madawat gikan sa SSS ug GSIS, ila ba kining gi-review pagsusi kon paigo pa ba kini karon niining  pagmahal sa mga palitunon ?

Art. 15, Sec 2 (e), pag-designate og usa ka barangay health worker, to attend to the seniors’ health needs, ug pag-establish og mga geriatric wards sa mga government hospitals, ug uban pang kakulangan.

Karon, specifically, ang suliran ug kabalaka natong mga senior citizens, naglakip sa “discrimination, fear, idleness, lowered self-esteem, dependency, lack of privacy, harsh realities of old age.” Suliran usab kini sa ubang kanasuran.

Dugang pang gibati karon natong mga senior citizens, mga common health conditions associated with ageing, naglakip sa “hearing and vision loss, cataracts and refractive errors, back and neck pain and osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, depression, dementia, malnutrition, ug  incontinence (the inability to control the flow of urine from the bladder).

Niay article giulohan ‘The Philippine Response to the Challenges of Ageing, sinulat ni Ruel G. Lucentales, Assistant Secretary Department of Social Welfare and Development. Ambut unsa ning tuiga  gisulat.

Anyway, matud niya, “The elderly serve as the bridge of the legacies of one generation to another. Whatever good society enjoys today reflects the goodness of the humanity the older persons have nurtured during their time.”

Gikinahanglan dinhi ang health care system for the elderly.

Actually, sangkap ang atong nasud sa National Policies and Plan of Action for Older Persons. Apan, akong tan-aw minus ug kulang sa kainit, dedication ug commitment pag-translate into action pagpatuman niini.

“The Philippines has undertaken tremendous efforts to pursue the policies of motivating and encouraging older persons to contribute to nation building.”

Ang gikinahanglan dinhi, mao ang panaghupong sa gobiyerno ug sa private sector pagpalambo sa well-being sa mga senior citizens, “thus, ensuring sustained contribution to national development by the country’s special human resource … the senior citizens.”
