MANILA, Philippines — Almost 3,000 Philippine National Police personnel were sanctioned last year for various violations, PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil announced yesterday.

The initiative is part of the PNP’s internal disciplinary efforts, Marbil said.

PNP data showed that 5,457 police personnel faced administrative charges. They were involved in 3,751 cases last year.

Of the number of erring PNP personnel, 2,765 were punished and 2,691 were exonerated.

Among those who were sanctioned, 1,112 PNP personnel were suspended, including one colonel, 19 lieutenant colonels, 29 majors, 30 captains and 22 lieutenants.

Up to 903 police officers were dismissed from the service for various offenses, including five lieutenant colonels, six majors, 12 captains and five lieutenants.

Other sanctions imposed include 108 demotions, 103 cases of salary forfeiture, 423 reprimands, 82 restrictions and 34 instances of withholding privileges.

“These figures demonstrate the PNP’s unwavering commitment to cleansing its ranks while ensuring due process,” Marbil said, adding that their efforts reflect their resolve to uphold integrity and maintain public trust.

Meanwhile, the PNP placed 20 police officers under restrictive custody for their involvement in the staged seizure of P6.7 billion worth of shabu in Tondo, Manila in 2022.

Of the 30 suspects, two have retired, three opted for early retirement, one resigned and two were dismissed from the police service.

The PNP’s reform agenda is anchored on the internal disciplinary mechanism, established under Memorandum Circular No. 20-2020.

To improve efficiency, the PNP has adopted a zero backlog program as part of the 110-day case resolution timeframe set by the National Police Commission.

Last year, 1,663 police personnel underwent seminars on disciplinary policies to enhance case handling procedures.

“The PNP remains steadfast in its commitment to internal cleansing and organizational excellence,” Marbil said.

“These efforts not only strengthen our institution, but also reaffirm our dedication to serving and protecting the public with honor and integrity,” he added.
