Council asks DOTr: Study trams in BRT lanes
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Council is asking the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to conduct a study for the possible integration of a tram into the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit.
A tram is also a public transport vehicle, usually powered by electricity from wires above it and travels along rails on the surface of a street.
The idea of having a tram here came from a resolution of City Councilor Jocelyn Pesquera that the City Council recently approved.
"In order to maximize the utilization of the dedicated stops constructed by the DOTr, it is imperative that the DOTr must study the possibility of including the trams as mode of transportation in the City of Cebu," read the resolution.
Pesquera had been to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Brussels, Belgium; Paris, and Nice, France where she observed that trams and buses share the same stations and lanes.
“The said dedicated stops and even the soon to be established dedicated lanes for the BRT can be utilized as well by the trams, if ever,” Pesquera said.
If the DOTr studies it and finds it feasible, the next step the city government will do is to find funding for its realization, including funding from the House of Representatives through the city’s representatives in Congress.
Having a tram here is also expected to help solve the increasing demand of public transport, while also easing up traffic in the city.
Based on Pesquera ‘s observation, trams are a fast kind of transportation. – Sanden J. Anadia/GAN
