Warning to rulers!
May 13, 2001 | 12:00am
Today is election day. We will vote for our leaders and reap what we sow.
I received an article (writer unknown) from the Internet a long time ago, which I printed and kept. It’s called the "Senate Prayer," an appropriate subject for today. It went:
When minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but what they heard was a stirring prayer, passionately calling our country to repentance and righteousness.
The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest. In six short weeks, the Central Christian Church had logged more than 5,000 calls, with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of the prayer from India, Africa and Korea.
Heavenly Father, we come before You today to ask Your forgiveness, direction, and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe on those who call evil good," but that’s exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We confess that:
We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it pluralism.
We have worshipped other gods and called it multi-culturalism.
We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle.
We have exploited the poor and called it lottery [jueteng in the Philippines, I might add].
We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation.
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
We have killed our unborn children and called it a choice.
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.
We have abused power and called it political savvy.
We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women, who have been sent to direct us, to the center of Your will. I ask it in the name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
With the Lord’s help, may this prayer sweep our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again can- be called a Christian nation that fears the Lord!
In these days the forces of evil are organized with frightening efficiency. We have become a sinless and guiltless society where one is as good as his bank account; where children, who are allowed the recreation of slaying humans in computer games, are capable of slaying their classmates in school; where leaders enter politics to serve themselves instead of the people. To fight this we, Christians, cannot have one conscience in our private lives and another in public. Our Divine Master told us "Without Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5).
I join the rest of media in reminding people about their responsibility today. Listen to what God has to say to leaders and make the right choices:
Hear, therefore, kings, and understand; learn, you magistrates of the earth’s expanse!
Hearken, you who rule the multitude and lord it over throngs of peoples!
Because authority was given you by the Lord and sovereignty by the Most High, who shall probe your works and scrutinize your counsels!
Because, though you were ministers of his kingdom, you judged not rightly, and did not keep the Law, nor walk according to the will of God,
Terribly and swiftly shall he come against you, because judgment is stern for the exalted –
For the lowly may be pardoned out of mercy but the mighty shall be mightily put to test.
For the Lord of all shows no partiality, nor does he fear greatness, because he himself made the great as well as the small, and he provides for all alike;
But for the powerful a rigorous scrutiny impends.
To you, therefore, O princes, are my words addressed that you may learn wisdom and that you may not sin.
For those who keep the holy precepts hallowed shall be found holy, and those learned in them will have ready a response.
Desire therefore my words; long for them and you shall be instructed.
Let us vote for those who fear the Lord and will serve the nation instead of themselves, their families and their friends. By this time we know who they are.
