Samboy Lim: Cage icon adored by everyone

MANILA, Philippines — Tributes and praises from all walks of life were whispered up into the sky as Philippine basketball lost a legend in Samboy Lim.

From his former teammates, peers, colleagues, families and friends to the current generation of players and fans, loving messages flowed freely for ”The Skywalker” who passed away Saturday. He’s 61.

“The PBA mourns the loss of a true icon, a player whose contributions to the league have left an indelible mark on the hearts of basketball enthusiasts across the nation,” said the league, which recognizes Lim as one of its Greatest Players.

“Samboy soared to great heights with his remarkable skills, electrifying the court and captivating fans with his unparalleled talent,” the statement added.

His alma mater Letran, which he anchored to a three-peat NCAA championship in the 80s, paid tribute to one of the school’s greatest alumni.

“We pray for the eternal repose of the soul of Avelino ‘Samboy’ Lim Jr., our beloved Letran Knight and a basketball legend who graced the courts with brilliance and left an indelible mark on Philippine sports,” said Letran.

“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Our hearts mourn the loss of a true icon. Rest in peace, Letran Knight Samboy.”

Lim is recognized as trailblazer for high-flying acts, paving the path for other high-flyers like Vergel Meneses, Nelson Asaytono, Bong Alvarez and Kenneth Duremdes.

For decades, the aerial ace ruled the sky en route to an NCAA MVP feat, three NCAA titles and nine PBA crowns with San Miguel – the only team he ever played for in the PBA.

Off the court, Lim’s family and friends remembered him simply as “Samboy” – a modest, soft-spoken guy who embodied utmost humility, sportsmanship and kindness every time, everywhere and to everyone.

“So long, Sam! Your soul lives on in the people you touched. You will forever be in our hearts. My wife Karla and I are sending our deepest sympathies to Lelen Lim, Jamie and the whole family,” said Ramon Fernandez, his teammate in San Miguel’s 1989 PBA grandslam feat.

“Paalam partner. Sky high and walk into the arms of our LORD. Rest in paradise. Thank you for the friendship,” said Allan Caidic, Lim’s longtime partner in the national team and later in the PBA.

Lim’s famous jersey No. 9 was retired by San Miguel and served as inspiration for other players in every league across the archipelago.

For his incomparable contributions to the sport, he will be remembered forever in the annals of Philippine basketball and the streets of the hoops-ingrained nation.
