Bullpups crowned champs in Fr. Martin Cup

MANILA, Philippines — The National University Bullpups-B relied on their twin towers Carl Tamayo Kevin Quiambao in repulsing the Manila Patriotic School Patriots, 91-69, Sunday to claim the junior division title of the 15th Fr. Martin Cup Division 2 basketball tournament at the San Beda-Manila campus in Mendiola.
The six-foot-six Quiambao and James Pradella made 23 and 17 points, respectively, while 6’7 Tamayo added 12 for the Bullpups, who have so far won titles in two of three finals appearances since last year.
Dominic Dayrit contributed 10 points, and he made all of it the first period of this this cagefest, which is supported by Slick Tight Hair Pomade.
With the Patriots held to 10 points in the first 10 minutes of play, the Bullpups went on to post a 22-10 advantage in the first period.
Quiambao, a transferee from Lyceum-Batangas, took charge in the shaded lane in the first half with Tamayo.
Tamayo, who just moved in from Adamson University, made eight points in the second period, and his efforts with Quiambao underneath helped the Bullpups move further ahead, 45-29, at halftime.
Shawn Michael Umali banged in a game-high 18 points for the Patriots.
“We started strong and we were consistent the whole game,” said new Bullpups coach Goldwin Monteverde, who recently transferred from the Adamson Baby Falcons.
Members of the the Bullpups’ team B are part of their developmental pool, and will most of them won’t be playing for the coming 80th UAAP junior basketball season.
Meanwhile, all is set for the start of the 13th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open cagefest next month, according to commissioner Robert de la Rosa, and registration is still open for participants.
