Viloria puts everything on the line vs ‘Tyson’

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Reigning WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria, who’s turning 32 in two weeks, said he trains for and treats each fight like it would be his last.

That’s why during yesterday’s free-flowing 20-minute phone-patch interview arranged by Solar Sports, Viloria stressed the significance of his coming fight.

“There’s nothing for me if I don’t win this fight,” Viloria said from his training quarters in Los Angeles, a week before he faces Mexican Hernan “Tyson” Marquez.

“Every fight is dangerous and anything can happen,” said the “Hawaiian Punch” who almost faced retirement following a crushing loss to Panama’s Carlos Tamara in 2010.

The worst could have happened during that fight at the Astrodome in Pasay City. But Viloria refused to roll over and die, and worked his way back to the top.

He has gone undefeated in five fights since 2010 and proved a lot of people wrong.

The 5-foot-4 Viloria, who turns a year older on Nov. 24, has been nothing short of sensational in his last two outings, knocking out Giovani Segura and Omar Nino inside nine rounds.

Viloria trains at the Wild Card Gym under Ruben Gomez and the supervision of Freddie Roach. Filipino conditioning coach Marvin Somodio is also on hand.

“Training camp has been great. I’m ready. I wish the fight were tomorrow,” said Viloria.

His unification bout against the 24-year-old WBA flyweight champion is set at the Sports Arena in LA, and Viloria told Manila-based scribes he wants a knockout.

“The goal is to make that (knockout) happen,” said Viloria, who will climb the ring with a 31-3-0 (18 knockouts) record. Marquez is at 34-2-0 with 25 knockouts.
