DA: Phl to regain leadership in seaweed production
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - – The Department of Agriculture (DA) has vowed to reclaim the country’s leadership in seaweed production by tapping the coastal areas of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
DA Undersecretary Salvador Salacop made the statement at the 1st ARMM Seaweed Congress held here Monday, after acknowledging that Indonesia has taken the lead in the seaweed production since the Philippines shifted to carrageenan production.
The Philippines is currently the world’s largest producer of carrageenan, with an annual rated capacity of 34,500 metric tons.
“We want to revive the glory days of Philippine seaweed,” Salacop said, noting that the seaweed industry remains viable.
“We really have to harness our initiative, consolidate our support programs and make sure the support and resources given to the particular industry trickle down to the intended beneficiaries,” he said.
He said the seaweed congress is aimed at addressing the productivity, quality and financing interest to regain the Philippines’ standing in the world market.
Janice Musali, DA-ARMM assistant regional director said the region accounts for 23 percent of the total seaweed production in the country.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said seaweed production in Central Visayas, Oriental Mindoro and Guimaras is also being enhanced.
