MANILA, Philippines —  The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) yesterday reopened the 14-meter Adriatico Bridge in Malate, Manila 11 months after it collapsed.

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar led the reopening of the Adriatico Bridge, which collapsed in September 2017 when an overloaded garbage truck parked on the 33-year-old structure.

“To accommodate more traffic volume, we have widened Adriatico Bridge from four lanes to six lanes and increased its maximum allowable weight from 10 tons to 20 tons,” he said, adding that the reconstruction amounted to P44 million.

The bridge was also reconstructed with a higher elevation and wider waterway to increase the rate at which floodwaters drain into the Estero de San Antonio Abad and minimize flooding in the vicinity of St. Scholastica’s College, College of St. Benilde and De La Salle University, the DPWH said.
