MANILA, Philippines — College no more—San Beda is now a university after the Commission on Higher Education on Tuesday approved its university status.

The official school publication of former San Beda College, The Bedan, confirmed the news on its social media accounts.

Vice-Dean Marciano Delson reportedly said the commission en banc approved San Beda College as “San Beda University on Tuesday morning.

The Bedan also congratulated the institution for its approved status.

The CHED Memorandum Order No. 48 Series of 1996 said the distinctive honor of university status “shall be reserved only for the deserving Higher Education Institutions in the country which have proven their excellence in the areas of instruction, research, and extension.”

CHED requires Higher Education Institutions applying for the university status to have a feasibility study on the university status as well as the organizational structure, general policies on student admission and passing percentage rate in licensure exams, among others. The commission also required P50,000 fee for the application.

The processing of the university status takes a year.

The Order of St. Benedict or Benedictines established San Beda College in 1901.

President Rodrigo Duterte, former Justice Secretary now Sen. Leila De Lima, and Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II are among the notable alumni of the San Beda College of Law.
