PCG conducts relief, medical mission for Marawi evacuees
MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel yesterday distributed relief goods and conducted a medical mission for Marawi residents who evacuated to Iligan City.
Cmdr. Armand Balilo, PCG spokesman and head of the community relations service command, said they spent P1.4 million for the mission.
Lt. Cmdr. Albert Ferre, PCG-Iligan chief, said over 300 evacuees had been provided relief assistance.
The PCG brought five medical doctors and dentists, who also conducted stress debriefing for the evacuees.
Medical and hygiene kits, food packs and bottled water as well as slippers donated by schools in Caloocan City were distributed to the evacuees at a covered court in Barangay Maria Cristina.
Ferre said they set a 2:30 p.m. deadline for the relief mission as a security measure.
“We were around 30 to 45 minutes away from Marawi City… Even if there are checkpoints and the city itself is secured...there is still a sense of danger. We cannot rule out the possibility that local terrorist groups are just waiting for an opportune time to create a scenario,” he said.
