Before setting out to the Sinulog Parade
CEBU, Philippines - As the drumbeats begin to suffuse the air and added with the fact that there’s no cell phone signal today, the idea of going out to the Sinulog Parade may be irresistible. If so, there are certain things to take care of before setting out.
If young kids are also going, the website www.parents.com suggests the following for final check:
Identification and Contact Information. The parents’ names and phone number must be written clearly on the underside of a child’s bracelet ID or in a card tucked securely in the kid’s pocket. Even if the child can recite his parents’ cell phone number, it’s a good idea to write it where he can keep it in case he forgets. Special bracelets are available for the purpose, or family members can make their own bracelet or dog tag. Some parents also write their phone number on the tongue of the child’s shoe.
Dressing boldly. The child can be dressed up in an easy-to-spot color like orange or neon green, and consider vibrant hats and bows, since these are easier to see in a crowd. A bright color may also detract predators, since they tend to avoid kids who draw attention, says a security expert.
A “Before” Shot. It’s important for parents to snap a picture of their little child, using a phone camera, just as the family is heading out. Just in case the child gets lost, there’s a “latest” picture to show to police officers and other people who might be able to help in the search. And the picture will also help if parents can’t remember exactly or describe what the child was wearing. In a moment of panic, everyone always forgets, confusing outfits or colors.
Now, if everything is in good order, the family may begin to set out and securely close the door behind them. The Sinulog streets are waiting. (FREEMAN)
