Abra, Mountain Province on poll watchlist

Artemio Dumlao - The Philippine Star

BANGUED, Philippines – Abra and Mountain Province have been added to the list of election hotspots.

Ricardo Lampac, Benguet election officer, said the two provinces are being monitored due to intense political rivalry.

Lampac cited the towns of Paracelis and Sadanga towns in Mountain Province where previous elections were marred by violence.

He said a precinct count optical scan machine was destroyed and a school burned in Paracelis in 2010 and 2013, respectively.

Lampac said intense political rivalry is also expected in Sadanga. Mayor Gabino Ganggangan, a former official of the Cordillera People’s Liberation Army, is seeking reelection and running against Jose Limmayog, a former director of the National Bureau of Investigation.

Election officer Mae Richelle Belmes-Beronilla said Abra is considered an election hotspot even though no election-related violence has been reported.

The Comelec said the cities of Baguio and Tabuk are generally peaceful. In Tabuk, the candidates for congressman and mayor are running unopposed.
