Army major dies during marathon in Alabang
MANILA, Philippines — A 40-year old Army major died while participating in a marathon at the Alabang Skyway on Sunday Sunday, a military official said.
Maj. Arnold Lubang suffered from cardiac arrest and collapsed barely one kilometer away from the finish line of the 21-km "Run for a Hero" Condura Skyway Marathon Run, Army spokesman Col. Benjamin Hao said in a statement.
Lubang was rushed at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Alabang, Muntinlupa City but died on the way.
The late Army major was a member of the Philippine Military Academy class 2000 and is said to be very enthusiastic in joining running events.
"He actively participated in various running events. We were shocked upon receiving the report on the death of our mistah (classmate)," said Maj. Joey Capirig, a classmate of Lubang.
Capirig described Lubang as "an achiever, a fighter and among the best officers of the Philippine Army."
Lubang was named best junior officer during his stint as company commander of the 4th Infantry Division in Cagayan de Oro City. He was also awarded the Gold Cross Medal, the third highest award for bravery in combat, in 2003. — with a report from Mike Frialde
