Alsons vows to supply 25% of Mindanao power needs by 2016

The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines   â€“ The Alsons Power Group is committed to ensuring full construction of its ongoing generating plant projects in Mindanao with capacity to produce 463 megawatts (MW) of electricity that will account for more than a fourth of the island’s peak electricity demand by 2016.

Joseph Nocos, Alsons Power’s vice president for project development, assured the Zamboanga City council in a special session last week that his firm would do everything to ensure that by 2016, the Zamboanga City Electrical Cooperative will have access to baseload capacity generated by Alsons Power as agreed upon in the power sales agreement.

“Our commitment to the people and the city of Zamboanga remains steadfast,” Nocos told the city council.

The Alsons Power Group is the developer of the prospective 105-MW San Ramon Power, Inc. coal-fired plant in Talisayan, Zamboanga City and  controls and operates the 100-MW Western Mindanao Power Corp. diesel plant in Sangali, Zamboanga City.

Apart from these facilities, Alsons Power also operates the Southern Philippines Power Corp.’s 55-MW diesel plant in Alabel, Sarangani and is currently constructing the 255-MW Sarangani Energy Corp. coal-fired power plant in Maasim, Sarangani, which will begin operations in 2015.

“By 2016, Alsons Power facilities will be generating at least 463 MW – more than one-fourth of the Department of Energy’s projected 2016 Mindanao peak power demand of 1,829 MW,” Nocos said.

He reiterated the company’s commitment to ensure stable baseload electricity supply to Zamboanga City by 2016 as he noted that the city is currently supplied with electricity by another Alsons Power facility – the Mapalad Power Corp. diesel plant in Iligan City.

“Our Mapalad Power diesel plant in Iligan City has provided substantial relief from the power outages that have plagued Zamboanga City,” Nocos said.
