Vendor killed, 12 hurt as fire truck crashes in Paco

MANILA, Philippines - A vegetable vendor was killed and 12 others were hurt when a fire truck lost its brakes and crashed into a row of stalls in Paco, Manila Saturday afternoon.

Killed was Corazon Apambe, 42. The injured victims, including two students and bystanders were taken to the Philippine General Hospital for treatment, Senior Police Office 4 Rizalino Intal of the Manila Police District (MPD) said.

John Mark Calica, 35, driver of the wayward fire truck, was detained at the MPD detention cell.

Superintendent Romeo Macapaz said the brakes of the Southern Manila Volunteer Fire Brigade fire truck malfunctioned, prompting Calica to lose control of the vehicle at around 3 p.m.

Macapaz said charges of homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to properties are being readied against Calica.
