Street in Talisay to be named“Monsignor Teofilo Camomot”
CEBU, Philippines - A portion of a street in barangay Poblacion, Talisay City will be named Msgr. Teofilo Camomot.
In a proposed ordinance sponsored by city Councilor Socrates Fernandez, the councilor said he wants to honor the former archbishop who was a dedicated priest for 20 years at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Sta. Teresa de Avila.
The church, located in barangay Poblacion, is considered to be part of Cebu’s heritage.
It is also where the old municipal hall is situated.
The original church was made of finely-cut coral stones but was heavily damaged in 1945 by the United States during aerial bombings.
It was restored in 1950 under the watch of then Fr. Teofilo Camomot who went on to become the archbishop of Cagayan de Oro before he died in 1988 while on his way home to Carcar from barangay Mabolo, Cebu City.
Fernandez said the Catholic Church has an instance to elevate Camomot for beatification and canonization. Camomot was a native of Carcar who was known for his genuine service and generosity to the poor.
Claims of miracles attributed to Msgr. Camomot circulated after he was reportedly seen in two different places at the same time while he was still serving the clergy of Cebu.
An evidence of one authentic miracle is needed for the Vatican to declare a member of the faithful blessed. Two miracles are needed for sainthood. (FREEMAN)
