Fil-Chinese trader killed in QC ambush

- Christina Mendez -

A 40-year-old Filipino-Chinese businessman was shot dead by two motorcycle-riding men in an ambush in Quezon City last Tuesday night.

Senior Inspector Rodolfo Jaraza, head of the Criminal Investigation Division-Homicide Division, is looking into at least two angles in the slay of Wilson Guiam Ong, married, resident of 24 Florante Street, Barangay Plainview, Mandaluyong City.

The killing could be personal in motive or business-related, he said. "We are investigating both angles but it would be too early to know until witnesses have provided their statements," Jaraza clarified.

Ong was shot to death at around 10:45 p.m. while driving his car towards Kamuning Road from Tomas Morato Avenue.

Prior to the killing, Ong had dinner with six other businessmen at the Kim Hong Dimsum restaurant along Tomas Morato. The meeting, police said, was a "regular" routine for Ong and his business pals.

Police said Ong, in his dark blue Honda Accord (TNT-766), had just driven away from the restaurant when assassins riding in tandem on a motorcycle peppered him with bullets.

At least seven bullets from a caliber .45 pistol hit Ong. He was declared dead on arrival at the Capitol Medical Center.

Ong was a bigtime supplier of imported home appliances to different department stores in Metro Manila. SM Shoemart stores are some of Ong's clients, police said.

Only one of three witnesses arrived at the CID-Homicide Investigation Division to provide information to investigators yesterday.

Jaraza hoped that the witnesses could provide a good description of the gunman and his companion.

"We have a description of one of the killers but we need to corroborate it with other witnesses' accounts," he said. A cartographic sketch has yet to be released by the police.

At least three teams were dispatched yesterday to track down Ong's associates who were with him during the business meeting at the restaurant.

Police are looking for a certain "Alex," a Chinese-looking male, to shed light in Ong's killing. Alex was one of the six traders who dined with Ong on Tuesday night.
