MANILA, Philippines — The low pressure off Mindanao is likely to become a tropical cyclone—the first this year—state weather bureau PAGASA said Monday.

The new weather disturbance was spotted 3,240 kilometers east of Mindanao at 3 a.m.

Jomaila Garrido, PAGASA weather forecaster, said the LPA may intensify into a tropical depression and enter the Philippine area of responsibility on Friday.

The country’s first tropical cyclone will be called “Amang.”

The list of cyclone names ends with “Zigzag.”

The LPA, however, has no direct affect on any part of the country now, Garrido said

Around 19 to 20 tropical cyclones enter the country annually, the weather agency said.

Last year, 21 cyclones threatened the country, with Tropical Depression Usman as the last one. Landslides and flooding caused by Usman’s rains claimed the lives of 126 individuals. — Gaea Katreena Cabico
