DOLE to provide P30-million assistance to NCCC Mall employees
MANILA, Philippines — Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III vowed that no employee of the fire-stricken NCCC Mall in Davao City will be displaced as he ordered the release of P30 million worth of assistance Thursday.
The aid, which will benefit more than 2,000 employees, will cover the emergency employment of the workers or their dependents for 30 days.
DOLE’s regional office in Davao along with the Occupational Safety and Health Center and the Employees’ Compensation Commission will provide P20,000 to the kin of the 38 individuals who perished in the tragic fire.
Most of the recorded casualties were call center agents from the American BPO firm SSI.
ECC will also give P30,000 worth of burial assistance to the families of the victims and a provision of survivorship pension amounting to at least P3,700 per month.
NCCC earlier assured that its 616 regular mall workers will not lose their jobs and continue to receive their salaries as they will be reassigned to other businesses.
For the 192 workers under Bmirck Cooperative, NCCC said that talks are ongoing for their possible deployment to other establishments in the city.
The SSS management, on the other hand, pledged that their employees will be paid up to December 31. It added that it is rebuilding within two months, assuring their workers’ employment as soon as the operations resume.
DOLE and the Department of Justice have started their parallel investigations to determine liabilities for the deaths.
