Another long weekend: Sept. 1, 2017 a holiday

Eid al-Adha is the second of two Muslim holidays celebrated worldwide each year, and considered the holier of the two. It honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, as an act of obedience to God's command.

MANILA, Philippines (Updated 1:53 p.m.) — Malacañang released on Tuesday Proclamation 297 declaring Sept. 1, 2017 a regular holiday for the Muslim observance of Eid'l Adha, or the feast of sacrifice.

"Now, therefore, I, Rodrigo Roa Duterte, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare Friday, 01 September 2017, as a regular holiday throughout the country," the document stated.

The proclamation, signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on behalf of President Duterte, is based on Republic Act 9849. The law states that the yearly festival, the date of which is movable, is celebrated as a regular holiday.
