Reyes palalakasin ang depensa ng Gilas

CEBU, Philippines – May mga nakitang problema si national head coach Chot Reyes sa tatlong tune-up games ng Gilas Pilipinas sa katatapos na 2017 PBA All-Star Weekend.

“We still have a lot of work to do especially on de­fense,” sabi ni Reyes sa pagtatapos ng 2017 PBA All-Star Week kung saan nilabanan ng Gilas ang tatlong PBA All-Star selections bilang paghahanda sa darating na 2017 SEABA Championship na nakatakda sa Mayo 12-18 sa Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Tumabla ang Gilas sa Mindanao All Stars, 114-114 sa Cagayan de Oro, habang nanaig ang koponan sa pamamagitan ng come-from-behind win kontra sa Luzon squad Lucena at laban sa Visayas team sa Cebu.

Ngunit sa kabila nityo ay hindi nasiyahan si Reyes sa ipinakitang depensa at opensa ng Nationals sa nasabing tatlong exhibition matches.

“We gave up 60 points in the first half in all those games. That’s a very alarming situation for us although admittedly we played tough opponents,” wika ni Reyes. “They all have great shooters and good point guards who can create. Still, we have to work on our defense.”

Laban sa Luzon team noong Linggo ay nagkaroon ang Nationals ng 12 turnovers na ikinais ni Reyes.

“In our game Sunday, we had 12 turnovers in the first half alone. Obviously, they’re still not well familiar with each other,” wika ni Reyes.

“We have 10 days to understand each other’s tendencies and more importantly the roles they will play,” dagdag pa ng mentor.

Magsasagawa si Reyes ng twice-a-day training sessions bilang preparasyon sa SEABA event na tanging ruta para makapag­laro ang Gilas sa FIBA  Asia Cup na idaraos sa Beirut sa Agosto.

Inaasahang dumating na kagabi sa bansa si naturalized player Andray Blatche mula sa pagbabakasyon sa Atlanta.

Nagpahinga si Blatche matapos igiya ang  Xin­jiang Tigers sa korona sa Chinese Basketball League noong Abril 8.

Makakatulong muli ng 6-foot-10 at nine-year NBA veteran sa frontcourt si 6’11 June Mar Fajardo kagaya noong 2016 Manila Olympic qualifying tournament.

Ang iba pang nakatuwang ni Blatche ay sina Japeth Aguilar, Calvin Abueva, Troy Rosario, Jayson Castro at Terrence Romeo.
