MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte had given the go signal to execute convicted Filipina Mary Jane Veloso in Indonesia, according to a report.

The Jakarta Post reported that Indonesian President Joko Widodo said Duterte has given the "go-ahead to proceed with the execution" as quoted by Antara news agency.

"I have explained to [Duterte] about Mary Jane’s situation and I told him that Mary Jane [has been found guilty] for carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin. I also told him about the delay in the execution during the meeting," Widodo said.

The legal process will be followed up by Attorney General M. Prasetyo.

Militant labor group Migrante and the Veloso family expressed shock over the news from Indonesia.

"We demand an immediate explanation from President Duterte and Secretary Yasay, both duty-bound to defend the rights of Filipinos overseas, especially drug trafficking victims like Mary Jane," Migrante International chairperson Garry Martinez said in a statement.

On April 2015, Veloso was granted a last-minute reprieve as she was scheduled to be executed by firing squad in Indonesia.

Veloso was sentenced to death by an Indonesia court in 2010 for drug trafficking.

Duterte earlier said that he would plead for mercy on behalf of Veloso when he meets with Widodo.
